Egypt Erupts! Wed 2/2 Discussion

HOT OFF THE PRESS!
 Join us for our weekly "Hot Topic" discussion
Wed., Feb. 2nd, 7 PM

EgyptErupts"A massive and courageous uprising has erupted throughout Egypt-the most populous Arab country - with the youth at the forefront. What direction this will ultimately go, and how far, is to be determined. But this uprising already has been-and even more could be-an important element in shaking up the whole reactionary world order-giving oxygen to all those who hunger for liberation or are even dissatisfied with the way things are...

From demonstrations against U.S. attempts to suppress the uprising in Egypt, to forums - formal ones or street-corner gatherings - there is an opening to reach out to people with the real solution to all this, even as we unite with people to resist U.S. and Israeli attempts to prop up Mubarak and/or in other ways sidetrack and/or repress the struggle. There is a moment to reach out extremely broadly to those who are inspired by this upsurge - to hear their sentiments, to learn from their experience and how they are seeing things, and to let them know about and connect them with the movement for the complete emancipation of humanity from all chains of oppression - the movement for revolution and communism. Abortion, Sexuality, &  Women's Liberation
 Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 2pm

Come and join us on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade (the historic 1973 Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion nationwide) for intriguing presentations and discussion.

Hear from:

Carol Downer, co-founder of the Feminist Women’s Health Center* and author of A New View of a Woman’s Body;
Cory Ellen Gatrall, LA for Choice*;
• A speaker from the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA;
Lucia Marano, actor, will present dramatic readings of abortion letters;

"Imagine if abortion and birth control were available to all women at all times without stigma or apology.

"Imagine if everyone learned the science surrounding women's biology - as well as science and the scientific method more broadly - so that never again could so-called 'holy men' prey on people's ignorance and heap the weight of tradition, the shackles of forced motherhood and the suffocation of shame on women for exercising these most fundamental rights.

"It is not just a dream - it is possible - and it is urgently crying out to be done."  (From A Declaration: For Women's Liberation and the Emancipation of All Humanity, Revolution #158)

$5 to $10 suggested donation at the door. No one turned away for lack of funds.

Film Showing Caps Grand Opening Weekend of Revolution Books, L.A.

It was Sunday night, and the Grand Opening weekend for Revolution Books/Libros Revolución at its new location in East Hollywood was coming to a close. The store was filled to overflowing as nearly 100 people from many different parts of L.A., and many different sections of society and walks of life, were crowded in. There was electricity in the air that you could feel in the noisy conversations going on as many of the people were meeting the bookstore—and this revolution—for the first time.\

They had come to the store for a reception after seeing the remarkable film about the immigrant experience—Alambrista! (tightrope walker)—held at nearby Barnsdall Art Park as a fundraiser for the bookstore. After the film the audience had the opportunity to hear filmmaker Robert M. Young in conversation with Michael Slate, writer for Revolution newspaper and host of the Michael Slate Show on KPFK, and to ask questions of their own. The event, a fundraiser for the bookstore, drew 180 people, and afterwards people went to the store for the reception with the filmmaker.   [Read more from revcom.ushttp://revcom.us/a/223/libros-en.html]

Relocated... Revitalized... Revolution Books, L.A.

Revolution Books/Libros Revolución in Los Angeles ushered in the new year by celebrating the Grand Opening of its bookstore at a new location on Hollywood Boulevard.

Revolution Books is a place, a bookstore, where people meet the revolution. Where people come into the bookstore from all over the world and from different corners of this society to find the books and deep engagement with each other about the possibility of a radically different way the world could be.

Scientific and poetic, wrangling and visionary—Revolution Books is alive with a defiant spirit that refuses to accept that the horrors of today's world have to be. At the heart of Revolution Books is the cutting-edge work of Bob Avakian, whose new synthesis of communism envisions a radically new society that is overcoming all of the oppression of the current world while giving great scope to intellectual work, ferment, and dissent as integral to the complete emancipation of humanity.

It matters that there is an intellectual center for building a movement for revolution accessible to every section of society. A movement that is engaging, learning from, and struggling with a wide array of divergent viewpoints—all searching for a fundamental solution to the political, ideological, and ecological disasters that the people of the planet face today.

The Grand Opening of Revolution Books/Libros Revolución, L.A. in its new location holds great promise. But none of this can happen without a broad base of support, both financial and in other ways, coming forward now. By the end of the bookstore's Grand Opening weekend many people had volunteered to work with the bookstore in different ways; and progress was made in meeting the store's goal of 100 "Friends of Revolution Books" committed to be monthly financial sustainers of the store. For this potential to be realized, all those who are coming to see that this movement for revolution is urgently needed, and possible, must also realize that its success depends on you and what you do.  - from revcom.us

Successful Grand Opening Weekend! Volunteer Meeting Tues, Jan 11, 7 pm

Successful Grand Opening Weekend for
 Revolution Books / Libros Revolución!

Over the past weekend many new people stopped in for the Grand Opening of Revolution Books / Libros Revolución, LA!  One young man came in because he saw the bookstore  name on the window and said to himself, "'Revolution?'  'Books?' - that's my kind of place!"  Some just discovering the store said and felt "We really need a place like this!"  Others have been watching us building the store, waiting, finally saw the opening and came in.  Friends who had known us in downtown LA were thrilled at the new look, feel and location of the store.  It is for many truly a breath of fresh air!

Around one hundred and eighty people came to the grand opening benefit film showing of Alambrista (the classic, yet highly relevant film about the nightmare for immigrants in the U.S.) at the Barnsdall Gallery Theater and to the conversation between director Robert M. Young and Michael Slate, KPFK radio host and writer for Revolution newspaper.  Later many people crowded into the bookstore for a very warm and exciting post-screening reception for the director and for celebrating the new store.

Alambrista! (The Tightrope Walker) is a critically-acclaimed film that beautifully and movingly depicts the harsh realities of the lives of Mexican people on both sides of the border. The story is told through the eyes of Roberto, a young Mexican campesino who, following the birth of his first child, slips across the border into the United States in search of the American Dream and a way to feed and support his family back home. Instead, like so many others before and since, this young peasant finds the American Nightmare of heartbreak, exploitation, repression and disappointment. Along the way, he also finds friendship, affection and help.

Alambrista!, released in 1977, won the Camera d'Or at Cannes and best feature film at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain (1978).  This film has special significance today, when the lives of millions of undocumented immigrants are at stake.

Director Robert M. Young is one of the most innovative and passionate filmmakers in the U.S. over the past 50 years.  Among his narrative feature films are: Nothing But A Man, co-written and produced by Young, noted by Malcolm X as one of his favorite films; The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez; Extremities, and Miguel Pinero's Short Eyes, all lauded as cinematic masterpieces.  Robert Young makes films with an eye of placing the audience inside the story, not telling us what to think or do, confronting us with the hardest questions in ways that can leave us deeply changed.

From Revolution newspaper -

A Revolutionary Resolution:

It Is Not Enough to "Do Good" in a Bad World... We Must Bring Into Being a Whole Better World

...A movement for revolution is struggling to be born...

A revolution that can lift all of humanity out of its war-torn, blood-soaked, hunger-stricken state... a revolution that will empower people to build a society where people are no longer exploited, competing with each other just to survive, and brutally oppressed; that can not only put a stop to the plunder and destruction of the planet; but can unleash the creativity and joyfulness, the critical thinking and highest aspirations of masses everywhere as they join together to transform this world, and themselves, in the most liberating ways.
Over the last year, this revolution has been fighting its way onto the stage of history with new depth, renewed strategic approach, new momentum and-most of all-tremendous, still untapped potential. While there are many aspects to this movement for revolution, we want to highlight three developments which carry a great deal of the hope humanity has for a better world.

A New Year's Resolution

Step back and think about the people described at the start of this article: the child who has grown up under U.S.-made bombs, the women who have lived through hell, the beautiful Black youth and others who have been made to feel there is no place for them on this planet. Think about the people who are in turmoil over the crisis of the global environment, or the deadly "choices" framed by electoral politics. Most of these people-and the millions more like them-have never heard of this revolution or its leader. Yet, all of their futures and all of their hopes for something better, not only for themselves but for their children and the planet, are objectively bound up with this revolution advancing.
In this next year, let us who do know of this revolution not keep it to ourselves. Let us find the ways, as it says in the Message and Call, to "spread the word to every corner of this country... giving people the means to become part of this revolutionary movement, and organizing into this movement everyone who wants to make a contribution to it..." Let us put ourselves-collectively, creatively and energetically-to fighting through to the success of this campaign and towards the greatest advances that can be made towards revolution.
In sum, let us refuse to be hemmed in in our dreams and our determination by the weight of the very horrors of this world that we so righteously detest, let us not aim merely to "do some good" in this terrible world, but let us instead take up the challenge-and the joyful work-of fighting to bring a whole better world into being.
